Cataloging a Pomegranate

The purpose of this exercise was to deliberately and carefully study a pomegranate in order to notice and observe aspects of it that may not be immediately obvious. By studying it in various ways, such as through drawings, observing its decay, and by examining its transparency through illumination, one's understanding and appreciation of the fruit changes as the details and idiosyncrasies emerge.

Creating Forms from a Pomegranate

Using a pomegranate for inspiration, these models were created based on exploring certain aspects of the pomegranate's form. Upon stamping slices of pomegranate, the brass study models were created by examining the positive versus negative space within the stamps.

This set of study models examines the affect slices of pomegranate have on a white piece of paper throughout the day. The colors transition from blue in the early morning, to gray midday, and pink in the evening. The models represent the color changes, but also recreate the original color and quality of light.

Taking an existing model, the surface area of the planes were reduced to their most bare so only the edges of the forms remained.
